SSD Multi Layer Cell Solid State Disks (2.5 SATA SSD)

Multi Layer Cell Sold State Disk Drives can have larger data capacities of SSD memory but are slower than SLC drives. Here each cell can be split - so for a dual layer voltage between 1 and 50 and 51 and 100 doubles the capacity of the cell to store 2 lots of data. For a 4 layer cell between 1 and 25, 26 and 50, 51 and 75, 76 and 100 gives 4 layers of state within each cell. Currently there is only Single Layer Cell and Dual Layer Cell (incorrectly called Multi Layer cell) though Triple Layer Cell has been reported as under development by industry source. This of course takes longer to calculate which slows the drive down, but gives a greater data capacity. It also means a more complex controller card requiring greater accuracy. SSD laptop drives are now capable of 480GB SSD, SSD 512GB and even 960GB SSD or 1TB SSD sizes, for SATA Solid State Disk (SSD Disk drives). All this in a 2.5 SATA SSD.

Dispelling the myth of an SSD

People worry that the lifetime of an MLC drive will cause them an issue. In reality - unless you use the disk as a pure write cache in an enterprise system where you write to it over and over again multiple times in a day - it will outlive your laptop or PC many times over. The general rule of thumb is that if you wrute 200GB a day - every day - the drive would theoretically last 6 years. Therefore if you use an MLC Solid State Drive as your main OS disk drive - you might write to it at most 1GB a day (if you sat at it and downloaded data or really used the PC a lot) - therefore the drive will last 200x6 years - a nonsense figure.

Solid State Disk sizes have now reached a staggering size of 960GB - with 480GB offered by multiple vendors including Future Storage's own brand. MLC SSD is the future for the consumer Solid State Drive market.

2.5 SATA SSD are also available to use as solid state external disk drives. Simply put you laptop SSD into a disk caddy (especially a USB 3.0 Disk Caddy) and you can connect it to you laptop or desktop at incredible speeds. This will give a USB SSD which is robust enough to carry around in the toughest of environments.
